The crows wish you a happy Halloween
The crows were here yesterday. When they flock they can be super loud. We were out walking close to twilight. The sound was so loud we had to investigate. At first I thought geese. Geese are often loud. and they are common around here. But this cacophony seemed never ending and was not coming from the canal. Well we found them, the crows. They were in some trees, on roofs, and all over the sky. There were hundreds of them moving back and forth between a couple trees. Their true numbers were hidden by the leaves. Is this a fall thing? Are they on their way south and just arguing over where to stay the night?
I never googled it. I'd rather wonder at the oddity of it. Black crows have a mystique generated by movies and songs and probably old myths I don't know about. Pair that with the sight and smell of autumn leaves, it makes an impression, a spooky impression. Why would I want to ruin that with data.
My other crow experience was completely opposite. In the quiet predawn the crows were perched in a barren tree. The bare branches gave their numbers away despite their stillness. An hour later they were gone. Which is spookier?
