Geneva (Ohio not Switzerland)

 yeah, yeah, yeah!  Ohio wines suck.  They're sugar bombs for the novice palette.  Well, fuck you.  I want to hang with my friends and drink wine and eat pizza on a patio with heaters.  

So let's talk about Geneva.  First it's close to Lake Erie.  Why not pretend it's the ocean! Find a lounge chair with a cup holder and look out at the water and dream.  Or maybe just shoot the shit with your pals.  Ambiance adds a little something to our experiences, don't you think?  My friends and I can have a good time anywhere, but an "ocean" view just makes me happy.  

I bet on the lake there's a bit more night life, but you know me.  I love day drinking.  I want to hit as many wineries as possible between noon and five before passing out.  Geneva has a ton of wineries.  More than you can hit in a day, so do a little homework ahead of time.  

Laurello has good pizza.  

Baci winery has a nice sparkling reisling.  I love sparkles!

Ferrente has good food in general.  

Cask 307 and South River have nice outdoor seating.

Debonne has beer!  

I should have taken notes.  After a while they all run together.  Sorry.  The fact remains though.  You're not going to Geneva for that special vintage.  You're just going to have a few laughs.  Maybe it's hot.  Maybe it's cold.  Doesn't matter if you're an Ohioan.  As long as you and your pals have booze and fire, you have the makings of a good time.

Winter

Here it is February and I'm vacillating between the anxiety of cabin fever and hibernation. It was an easy winter. The past few years have been mild. Survivor

 Gina was a survivor.  Mom always paints a picture of a no-nonsense, hardworking, practical woman with little patience for whiney little girls who can't even deliver a single egg without smooshing it.  I've talked before about her strength and wisdom.  I'm sure she was the motivating force behind educating the children and leaving behind the share cropping life.  She certainly did not have the inclination to stay in the good graces of the church over practical matters.  Going her own way from the family (Read The Old Farmhouse blog) showed she had courage.  I like to think once you tap that well, you find courage to do other hard things.   Anyway, she always sent the kids and husband to church without her.  I'm sure she had shit to do, or simply wanted an hour or so of peace.  Who can say.  What this did give her though was freedom (to some extent) of judgement, and freedom to make practical clothes for her children.  Mom ...

What's my quota?

 She was going out of town for the weekend, to see a friend.  She seems to have a friend in a lot of big cities, Chicago, New York, LA, even London.  She's worked all over you see.  She doesn't like to tell her mom when she leaves.  Her mom is dependent on her, but she'll be okay.  Mom has a home health aid that comes around.  If she's lonely she has other children she can call.  Why she should be kept in the dark about her daughter's travels?  Its none of my business and I don't mind keeping such an innocuous secret.  Perhaps parental judgement is too much for my friend.  I'm told not to tell my Mom either.  Fine.  Just in case she slips up and says something.  It has happened.  We're not used to keeping secrets in my family.   I did ask if I could go.  My friend immediately looked uncomfortable.  I back pedaled.  Oh, I'm sure you want to have time to yourself with your friend.  Not...
