Fear

This is a simple story about two people.  Nothing notable happens.  It's the subtext that's interesting.  First from his point of view.   He is a young, black male.  He knows he has to be careful in this world.  He's often seen as a threat and misunderstandings can have dire consequences.  "Always strive", his mamma told him.  "People expect you to be dumb, to be violent, to be lazy."  It's always hanging over his head.    Walking along he sees a middle-aged, white woman.  Those were the worst, always expecting to be attacked somehow.  He's surprised she's even out.  It's getting dark.  She spots him, and he immediately apologizes.  "I didn't mean to scare ya!"  Friendly to the point of pandering.  It always disarms.  Sure enough, it works.  She smiles and notes they're dressed the same.  Why is she noting his appearance?  In case the cops ask later?  He hurries along ...

Montreal

This year for Karen's birthday we went to Montreal.  This city has plenty to offer in the way of museums, history and art and nature and churches.  You can pretend you're in Paris!  Speak French, go to Notre Dame, and have a croissant.  Scratch that.  Have a bagel.  They're really good, and they do the 'all dressed thing' that I like.   Highlights: Archaeological Museum had an old sewer.  You know how I like sewers.  I don't know how old they were but they look pretty much the same as modern ones.   A squirrel attacked Karen at the Botanical gardens.  Well ok, it was just trying to get out of the trash can at the moment she passed.  Still scared the crap outa her.  Heh heh.  They had beautiful Asian gardens with a lot of bonsai.   Mary Queen of the World is an ornate church.  Beautiful!  It is supposed to mimic St,. Peter's Basilica.   Notre Dame, another fancy church....
