Why Minerva?



The Library of Congress is a really cool building, inside and out.  And i love libraries.  mostly i love the feeling of being surrounded by books, but in this case its the architecture.  Oh and they had a fun wonder woman display while i was there too.  This would have been 2017.  My favorite thing was Minerva.  she was prominently used in all the decor.  i assumed she was goddess of knowledge or some such thing.  Looking it up now i see she was originally goddess of war (just causes only), which somehow leads to wisdom and arts.  i found the war thing off putting, but i shouldn't.  Don't i admire warrior women?  mostly, Wonder Woman but there are a slew of fictional bad ass women i admire. Angela Bassett comes to mind, kicking ass in Strange Days.  Then there's the Power Puff girls.  for some reason Ruth Bader Ginsburg comes to mind.  Gloria Steinem too.  i never saw either of these ladies kick the shit outa anyone, just cause or otherwise, but still bad asses and more worthy of my admiration.  Oh, and my friend who warned that creeper she would bust his nose, and sure enough she did.  she's my real favorite!  

So it's Minerva in these pages because i love books, and i wish i was a bad ass.  I also like to wander which has nothing to do with Minerva but who cares.  it's my blog.  anyway, my mind wanders.  my feet wander.  hey, sometimes my hands wander, wink wink.  So let's wander the world, and maybe we'll find stories and maybe we'll find poetry!  I may never kick ass, but i've seen a few things and i have a story or two.  Maybe i'll write a book.

Winter

Here it is February and I'm vacillating between the anxiety of cabin fever and hibernation. It was an easy winter. The past few years have been mild. Still it's cold and I want to hide under my covers. Or I want to make soup and wear sweaters. I actually caught myself getting really down this year. I bought one of those seasonal disorder lamps. Could be placebo, could work like a charm. who cares! it simulates the sun, right? Well I love the sun.  Still we were talking cabin fever. Survivor

 Gina was a survivor.  Mom always paints a picture of a no-nonsense, hardworking, practical woman with little patience for whiney little girls who can't even deliver a single egg without smooshing it.  I've talked before about her strength and wisdom.  I'm sure she was the motivating force behind educating the children and leaving behind the share cropping life.  She certainly did not have the inclination to stay in the good graces of the church over practical matters.  Going her own way from the family (Read The Old Farmhouse blog) showed she had courage.  I like to think once you tap that well, you find courage to do other hard things.   Anyway, she always sent the kids and husband to church without her.  I'm sure she had shit to do, or simply wanted an hour or so of peace.  Who can say.  What this did give her though was freedom (to some extent) of judgement, and freedom to make practical clothes for her children.  Mom ...

What's my quota?

 She was going out of town for the weekend, to see a friend.  She seems to have a friend in a lot of big cities, Chicago, New York, LA, even London.  She's worked all over you see.  She doesn't like to tell her mom when she leaves.  Her mom is dependent on her, but she'll be okay.  Mom has a home health aid that comes around.  If she's lonely she has other children she can call.  Why she should be kept in the dark about her daughter's travels?  Its none of my business and I don't mind keeping such an innocuous secret.  Perhaps parental judgement is too much for my friend.  I'm told not to tell my Mom either.  Fine.  Just in case she slips up and says something.  It has happened.  We're not used to keeping secrets in my family.   I did ask if I could go.  My friend immediately looked uncomfortable.  I back pedaled.  Oh, I'm sure you want to have time to yourself with your friend.  Not...
