Is it too early to pack?

 


Ok, so this isn't a picture of somewhere I'm off to.  It's a picture of somewhere I've been.  But who can tell?  

I always wait till the last second to pack.  Now some might think that shows a hesitancy to leave.  If that were true I wouldn't be going all the time.  I used to think it was because i wanted to spend as much free time as i could with the old man before i left.  He never came with me, you see.  Well, the old man  is no longer mine, so maybe i'm just lazy?  Let's call it habit.  

Well i have less than two weeks till it's vacation time!  10 days of paradise in St. John.  I can't remember when i put St. John on my list, but it's been years.  Mostly because it's National park, so that means unspoiled wonder land, right?  Full of cute critters and amazing snorkeling  And since my friends will be there, alcohol infused shenanigans.  As a side note i believe the shenanigans of middle aged women such as ourselves, must be wilder than the those of any young sexy 20 somethings that movies would have you believe.  mostly because we no longer give a fuck. do we look stupid?  yes, who gives a fuck.  is this dangerous?  nah!  my girls have my back.  did i not have enough fun as a young sexy 20 something?  correct, come here sweetie.  

Anyway, packing.  It's definitely not too early.  Its two weeks out and its cold here, so those shorts can sit in my luggage same as in my closet, doing nothing.  I'm at that point in my life where i can go a month without doing laundry and still have clean underwear.  so let's pack.  

  • shorts - check
  • t shirts - check
  • underwear - check
  • water shoes - check
  • brand new super cute swim suits - check
Well I'm bored already.

 My brother lives in Virginia.  When I visit, sometimes I drive there in one shot, sometimes I break it in two.  Mom and I will find a place to stop for the night, where ever we are, when ever we feel.  Now I know the title of this piece is Berkley Springs but i feel like talking about Harpers Ferry first.   If you don't know about Harpers Ferry, you should google it.  John Brown lived in my home town.  I learned about him in elementary school.  He hated slavery, and he was fighter.  What's more American than that!  A rebellious freedom fighter!  It's why we as a nation always root for the little guy and never The Man.  As a kid I assumed this all went down in my home town.  We all know where the John Brown house is.  Nope.  The shit hit the fan in Harpers Ferry.  He raided the armory and tried to start a rebellion.  Then they killed him.  Like I said, Google it.  I'm not a historian....

I Love Rock 'n Roll

 When I was a kid, I dressed up as Joan Jett for Halloween.  I'd like to say it was because I was a badass cool kid, but the fact was I was invited to a theme party.  It was an excuse for the hostess to be Madonna.  It was the 80's.  Well I was at a loss, and we had this Joan Jett 45, I Love Rock and Roll to be specific.  So somewhere I got a pink jacket and a neckerchief.  I lip synced to I Love Rock and Roll with zero flare.  That's ok.  I was known as the shy kid.  They were nice, even though I was boring.   So fast forward what, 40 years?  I visited the Rock N Roll hall of fame recently.  It was my second time there and I enjoyed it much more the second time.  Good Elvis exhibit.  Good girl music exhibit.  Beatles, Hip Hop, Rolling Stones, Bon Jovi.  What I really liked was the interactive stuff.  Wanna pick up an Ax (or guitar, ahem, for you poor non musical bastards) and give it a try?...

The music of New Orleans

 My only wish was to go to Frenchman Street.  Many years ago I had been to Preservation Hall but had not been impressed.  So this time I knew the deal.  Frenchman is where you go for music.  We were not let down.  the first place (Bamboula's) had a great band.  Many of the members were performing in Jackson Square earlier that week.  Gimme a trumpet playing band any day.  They did a great rendition of It's All Over Now by the Stones.  We danced.  We drank.  We moved on.  the next place had a banjo (the Spotted Cat).  Still fun, but let's go to the craft fair next door.   We visited a few other places.  The last place (?) had a wonderful female vocalist.  She'd give Adele a run for her money.  She finished her set far too quickly.  In fact I couldn't help but notice, we kept arriving during the last song or two of every set.   I got a taste.
